In the world of Physical Therapy, group therapy is a common practice. Typically, Physical Therapists (PT) work with two or more patients at the same time. This is not ideal for the patient or the Physical Therapist. Patient-specific, individualized sessions are optimal for patient progress and restored function. Here are some of the benefits:
Improved mobility and strength: In a one-on-one setting, the PT can be “eyes-on” and “hands-on” with every move the patient makes. They can assess pain, discomfort, strength, and flexibility while physically working with the patient.
Direct supervision: The Physical Therapist can assess the entire session without having to focus time on other patients. He or she can watch every move the patient makes to ensure optimal form and make any adjustments at that time.
Better patient/therapist interaction: One-on-one sessions can build trust between the patient and the PT. They are able to privately discuss struggles and victories during the therapy session that may not take place in a group setting.
Progress tracking: The Physical Therapist is able to track the patient’s progress more precisely and make any adjustments to the treatment plan accordingly.
Fewer sessions required: Individualized Physical Therapy allows the therapist to develop a very specific approach. This results in quicker healing and usually fewer sessions to reach the patient’s goals.
Simply put, patients have better outcomes in a shorter period of time with one-on-one Physical Therapy sessions.
